Emergency Contraception

Morning After Pill (Emergency Contraception Pill)

Emergency contraception (ECP), otherwise known as the ‘morning after pill’ has been available in Ireland without prescription since 2011. It is taken to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse.

There are currently 2 versions of the ECP available without prescription, Prevenelle/Norlevo (contains progesterone) and Ellaone (ulipristol). Prevenelle/Norlevo must be taken within 72 hours (3 days) of sex to be effective, Ellaone must be taken within 120 hours (5 days). Both are more effective the quicker it is taken after intercourse. Evidence to date supports the Ellaone as being more effective than Prevenelle/Norlevo.How Do I Get The Emergency Contraception Pill?In our pharmacies our policy is that to avail of the ECP without prescription you must be over 17, and that the person who needs it is present in the shop. Our pharmacist will ask you a few questions to ascertain that the ECP is suitable for you (this will happen in private in our consultation areas). You will also be required to fill in and sign a consultation form. All information given will be treated as confidential.

Both versions of the ECP are available on the medical card, but to get this you must visit your doctor to get a prescription before presenting it at the pharmacy.
